INTRODUCTION: THE CREATION THAT CONFOUNDS HUMANITY
When Allah chooses to mention a creation in the Quran, it is never without profound purpose. Among the insects named explicitly in the Holy Book, one stands as perhaps the most unexpected—and scientifically astonishing: the mosquito.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 26, Allah declares:
“Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example—that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, ‘What did Allah intend by this as an example?’ He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient.” (Quran 2:26)
At the time of revelation, the pagan Arabs mocked this verse. What wisdom could possibly lie in mentioning such a insignificant, despised creature?
Fourteen centuries later, modern science is still uncovering answers .
MIRACLE ONE: THE FEMALE MOSQUITO
The Arabic word used in Quran 2:26 is “ba’udah” —a feminine noun. This grammatical detail carries extraordinary scientific weight.
Why?
Because only the female mosquito bites humans and drinks blood. The male mosquito feeds exclusively on plant nectar and fruit juices. He possesses no mouthparts capable of piercing human skin.
This was absolutely unknown in 7th-century Arabia. No microscope existed. No entomological studies existed. Bedouin Arabs observing mosquitoes would have seen only tiny, identical-seeming insects buzzing around water sources and settlements.
Yet the Quran chose the feminine form with precision that 20th-century biology would only confirm .
MIRACLE TWO: “AND WHAT IS SMALLER THAN IT”
Perhaps even more remarkable is the phrase “or what is smaller than it” (aw ma fawqaha). Classical Arabic scholars interpreted this variously, but modern science has revealed a stunning reality.
There is an entire microscopic world living ON the mosquito.
Parasites, mites, and microorganisms so tiny they cannot be seen with the naked eye inhabit the mosquito’s body. Some species of parasitic mites attach themselves exclusively to mosquitoes. Plasmodium—the parasite that causes malaria—completes part of its lifecycle inside the mosquito’s body before being transmitted to humans.
The Quran did not simply mention a visible insect. It pointed to an entire invisible ecosystem that would remain hidden for over a thousand years .
MIRACLE THREE: THE MOSQUITO’S POWER OVER MANKIND
Consider this irony: A 2-milligram insect terrifies the 70-kilogram human.
Despite all our technology—fighter jets, supercomputing, artificial intelligence, space exploration—humanity remains powerless before the mosquito.
The Annual Toll:
| Disease | Vector Mosquito | Annual Infections | Annual Deaths | Vaccine Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malaria | Anopheles | 249 million cases | ~600,000 | Limited efficacy |
| Dengue | Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus | 100-400 million | ~40,000 | No cure; vaccine challenges |
| Yellow Fever | Aedes, Haemagogus | 200,000 cases | 30,000 | Vaccine exists but outbreaks continue |
| Japanese Encephalitis | Culex tritaeniorhynchus | 68,000 cases | 13,600-20,400 | Vaccine exists; 3 billion at risk |
| Zika | Aedes species | Hundreds of thousands | Low mortality; causes birth defects | No treatment |
| Chikungunya | Aedes species | Millions | Low mortality; chronic disability | No vaccine |
Global total deaths annually from mosquito-borne diseases: Over 700,000.
This makes the mosquito the single deadliest animal to humans on planet Earth—more than sharks, wolves, lions, and crocodiles combined.
Yet the Quran, in the 7th century, presented this “feeble” creature as a sign of Allah’s power. Not through its strength, but through the helplessness of even the strongest humans before it .
MIRACLE FOUR: THE COMPLEXITY OF THE CREATURE
Modern entomology has revealed that the mosquito’s apparently simple body contains engineering that human technology cannot replicate.
The Proboscis: The mosquito’s feeding apparatus contains six separate needle-like stylets. Two of these have tiny serrated teeth to saw through skin. Two more retract to create a passageway. One pumps saliva containing anticoagulants. One draws blood. All six work in perfect coordination.
The Antennae: Male mosquitoes detect female wing beats using the Johnston’s organ at the base of their antennae—a sensory system so sensitive it can detect vibrations at the atomic level .
The Flight Mechanism: Mosquitoes can fly in rain, dodging raindrops that weigh 50 times more than they do. They can hover, fly backward, and execute 180-degree turns in milliseconds.
A creature smaller than a fingernail contains:
- A sophisticated sensory array
- A precision drilling mechanism
- A chemical laboratory (anticoagulants, anesthetics)
- A navigation system
- A reproductive system
Allah asks in the Quran: “O mankind, an example is presented, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose.” (Quran 22:73)
MIRACLE FIVE: THE QURANIC WORD CHOICE
The Quran uses the word “ba’udah” —a specific term for mosquito, distinct from general words for insects or gnats.
Linguistic analysis confirms this is the precise term for the blood-feeding insect we know today. The Quranic Arabic Corpus at the University of Leeds documents this word’s unique occurrence in the text, noting its feminine gender and specific biological referent .
This is not a vague reference to “small creatures.” It is an exact designation.
WHAT THE DISBELIEVERS SAID — AND STILL SAY
The verse itself records the objection: “What did Allah intend by this as an example?”
This objection continues today. Skeptics ask: Why a mosquito? Why not mention galaxies, mountains, oceans?
The Quranic answer is profound:
Allah is not ashamed. He does not consider any of His creations too small or insignificant to serve as a sign. The One who created the universe also created the mosquito. Both manifest His power. Both contain His wisdom.
The skeptic who demands only “grand” signs misunderstands the nature of divine communication. The same hand that holds the galaxies also holds the atom. Neither diminishes His majesty .
THE MORAL DIMENSION: SWARMS OF MOSQUITOES
Classical Islamic scholarship drew a powerful parallel between the mosquito and certain human behaviors.
The mosquito:
- Lands softly, unnoticed
- Feeds on the blood of others
- Departs, leaving its victim weakened and itching
- Returns repeatedly
Scholars identified four categories of people who resemble “swarms of mosquitoes”:
1. The Backbiters — Those who consume the reputation of others, “eating the flesh of their dead brothers” (Quran 49:12). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw such people on the Night of Ascension, scratching their faces and chests with copper nails .
2. The Tale-Bearers — Those who carry gossip between people to sow discord. The Prophet ﷺ passed by two graves and said their occupants were being punished—one for urine splashes, the other for spreading calumny .
3. The Mockers — Those who ridicule others, forgetting that those they mock may be better in Allah’s sight (Quran 49:11) .
4. The Spies — Those who violate privacy, seeking faults while blind to their own. The Prophet ﷺ warned: “Whoever seeks his brother’s faults will have his own faults exposed by Allah, even in his own house” .
The mosquito is not merely a biological sign. It is a mirror.
SCIENTIFIC “MIRACLES”: A CAUTIONARY NOTE
It must be stated clearly: Not every claim about the mosquito made in the name of Quranic miracles is scientifically sound.
Some well-meaning writers have incorrectly claimed that:
- Mosquitoes use photosynthesis (false; they are not plants)
- The Quran describes mosquito hearing mechanisms in detail (not explicit in the text)
- Light produces audible sound at the atomic level (unproven speculation)
These overreach harm the very case they seek to strengthen. The authentic miracles of the mosquito require no exaggeration. The scientifically verified facts—female specificity, microscopic parasites, disease vectoring, biological complexity—are extraordinary enough.
Islam does not need fabricated miracles. Its real miracles are sufficient.

CONCLUSION: THE SIGN THAT KEEPS GIVING
The mosquito verse was revealed in the 7th century. In the 20th century, electron microscopes revealed the mosquito’s intricate anatomy. In the 21st century, genomic sequencing is revealing its DNA. In the 22nd century and beyond, what more will we discover?
Each generation finds new meanings in this verse. The pagans of Makkah saw only a tiny insect. Medieval scholars saw a moral lesson. Modern scientists see biological precision. Future generations will see what our instruments cannot yet detect.
This is the hallmark of divine revelation: It is inexhaustible.
The mosquito, despised and insignificant in human eyes, was never insignificant to its Creator. And He mentioned it in His eternal Book—not as an embarrassment, but as a sign.
Fourteen centuries later, the sign still speaks.
